The first porch gathering on Bancroft Street was meant to be simple: a few folding tables, a cooler, and an invitation taped to a telephone pole. Five years later, the annual afternoon brings together longtime homeowners, renters, children, and neighbors who moved in only weeks ago.
There is no stage and no admission fee. A retired music teacher brings a keyboard, someone grills corn, and the youngest guests spend most of the day drawing with sidewalk chalk.
Organizers say the most valuable part happens between the scheduled activities. People learn who can lend a ladder, who needs a ride to the grocery store, and which houses have stories worth hearing.
